I know I don’t know everything about what’s going in the world today, but I have been doing a lot of research. Reading a lot of this research can make me feel a little overwhelmed and anxious. I do not like being in that space-a space of uncertainty and unfamiliarity. And I also know that when I am in this kind a space I turn to those activities that give me peace. Reading my bible is one source of space-it helps me stay grounded and in the moment. I have a handful of verses that I read every day and these restore my peace.

And then I read fiction. Fiction helps me escape my reality for a few minutes and helps me fantasize, dream and enjoy life through the eyes of the author.

Fiction helps me escape my reality for a few minutes and helps me fantasize, dream and enjoy life through the eyes of the author.”

Yes I know, I do not intend to run from the real and serious issues of the world. But in order for me to stay sane and grounded and maintain the emotional and physical strength to tackle these issues I MUST be grounded.

Therefore, I have chosen the following books. I am so excited to dive into these. As a young adult, and active learner, with the help of my mentor and sister friend, Deborah Glenn, I was taught the importance of reading fictional books written by people of color. When it comes to other books, I read them all, if they’re good or recommended of course. But fiction, for me, is no option.

So for my first read, I chose to return to a favorite, by Terry McMillan, no need to explain. After she introduced her first book, I stayed ready waiting for the next in order to get it and devour it. However, I realized that I am a little behind. But the other two are from an author I just discovered on Instagram, Elizabeth Acevedo. I really look forward to diving into these two.

So for now, I will stay grounded an in peace while reading my bible. I will allow myself to get swept away while reading some fiction.

In the meantime, I am sending love and light to all who read this! May you be grounded and peaceful!

Be You, Love You and Forgive You!
